SAP S/4HANA Cloud — Public Edition
SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition is SAP's cloud-native ERP — the full S/4HANA suite running on SAP-managed, multi-tenant cloud infrastructure with quarterly updates delivered by SAP automatically. Finance, procurement, manufacturing, sales, inventory and HR in one integrated platform, accessible from any browser on any device, with no servers to manage and no annual upgrade projects. This is the ERP at the core of GROW with SAP and one of the editions available through RISE with SAP.
What SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is — and isn't
Public Edition is a specific product configuration — not just S/4HANA hosted in the cloud. The distinction matters for what it can do and how it's implemented.
Public Edition
- Full SAP S/4HANA suite in a shared cloud
- SAP manages infrastructure & Basis
- Quarterly updates — automatic
- SAP Fiori UX — browser, mobile-ready
- Subscription — predictable annual cost
- SAP Best Practices pre-configured
- Not S/4HANA on-premise hosted in cloud
- Not infinitely customisable in core ABAP
- Not SAP Private Edition (different product)
- Not a shared database — data is isolated
- Not limited to large enterprises
- Not a compromise on functional depth
- SAP Key User Extensibility — no code
- SAP Build Apps — low-code on BTP
- Custom Fiori apps on SAP BTP
- Integration Suite — third-party connect
- SAP Build Process Automation — RPA
- All extensions outside S/4HANA core
Multi-tenant ≠ shared data. Every customer's data is logically isolated on dedicated schema. "Multi-tenant" refers to the shared infrastructure layer SAP manages — not to any shared access between customer databases.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition for India — statutory compliance built in
Indian statutory compliance is included in S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition's India localisation — not an add-on, not a third-party bolt-on. GST, e-invoicing, TDS/TCS and Indian payroll are configured during implementation and updated when regulations change.
GST — Goods & Services Tax
CGST, SGST, IGST and UTGST calculation on every transaction. HSN/SAC codes on invoice lines. GST registration for multiple states. Input tax credit tracking and reconciliation. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data preparation.
e-Invoicing (IRN / IRP)
Integration with the Invoice Registration Portal — IRN number generated and QR code embedded in the invoice PDF automatically for every qualifying B2B transaction. e-Invoice cancellation managed within S/4HANA.
e-Way Bill
e-Way bill generation from outbound delivery orders via NIC portal API. EWB number printed on delivery note. Cancellation and extension of e-way bills managed within the system without manual portal login.
TDS — Tax Deducted at Source
TDS deduction on vendor payments for applicable sections (194C, 194J, 194H etc.). TDS certificates generated, 26Q return data prepared and lower deduction certificate management within S/4HANA.
TCS — Tax Collected at Source
TCS collection on applicable customer receipts and sales. TCS tracking per customer, TCS certificates issued and 27EQ return data preparation from S/4HANA financial entries.
Indian Payroll
PF (Provident Fund), ESI (Employee State Insurance), Professional Tax and income tax calculation for Indian employees. Form 16 and payslip generation. Indian payroll localisation available in Public Edition.
Bank Integration
NEFT, RTGS and IMPS payment file generation from S/4HANA payment runs. Bank statement import via MT940/CAMT.053 format or direct bank API integration for automatic reconciliation.
MCA & Companies Act
Financial statement formats compliant with the Companies Act 2013 — Schedule III balance sheet and P&L format, board resolution support and statutory audit report data preparation.
Multi-State Operations
Multi-company code and multi-plant structures for businesses operating across states — with state-wise GST registration, inter-state and intra-state transaction handling, and consolidated reporting at group level.
How SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is structured
Understanding the architecture matters for integration planning, extension design and data governance. Public Edition is built on four distinct layers — each with different responsibilities and ownership.
What SAP manages (you don't touch)
- Cloud infrastructure and virtual machines
- SAP Basis, kernel and system administration
- Security patching and OS updates
- Quarterly S/4HANA application updates
- Database administration and backup
- Disaster recovery and high availability
What your team manages
- S/4HANA configuration and business processes
- User management and access roles
- SAP Key User Extensibility settings
- BTP extension landscape (with your partner)
- Integration configurations
- Quarterly update preview validation
Public Edition vs Private Edition — key deciding factors
Choose Public Edition when…
Your processes are reasonably standard and you can adopt SAP Best Practices with process change management. You want the fastest go-live, lowest infrastructure cost and no upgrade project cycles. You're implementing SAP for the first time (GROW) or on RISE without heavy ECC customisations to migrate.
Choose Private Edition when…
You're migrating from ECC with complex ABAP customisations that need to be preserved. You have industry-specific requirements not covered by Public Edition's standard processes. You need full ABAP development access in the core. You're on RISE and your process complexity demands it.
How we help you decide
We conduct a landscape and process assessment — evaluating your current processes against S/4HANA Public Edition's standard coverage, analysing the gap list and modelling the effort to close gaps via BTP extensions vs Private Edition ABAP. The recommendation is documented before you commit commercially.
Can you move from Public to Private later?
Migration from Public to Private Edition is technically possible but involves significant effort — it's not a simple switch. Choosing the right edition upfront is far less costly than migrating later. Our assessment prevents this by ensuring the recommendation is based on actual process fit, not commercial convenience.
Quarterly updates — what changes
SAP delivers four major update packages per year to Public Edition — new features, enhanced processes, localisation updates and security fixes. Customers preview updates in a dedicated preview system before production deployment. Our AMS team manages this validation cycle for clients, ensuring updates don't disrupt live operations.
What about data residency?
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition runs on hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP) in SAP-selected regions. Data residency options are available — for Indian businesses, SAP datacentre regions can be specified. Data isolation between customers is logical (schema-level), not physical — a consideration for regulated industries with strict data sovereignty requirements.
Why 2iSolutions for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
SAP Gold Partner — S/4HANA Cloud Certified
Certified to implement SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition — with access to SAP's cloud implementation tooling, Activate methodology content and partner support channel. S/4HANA Cloud certification requires demonstrated delivery capability; it's a prerequisite, not a formality.
88-Day Average Go-Live
Our average S/4HANA go-live — across Public and Private Edition — is 88 days. Public Edition's standardised scope and SAP Activate accelerators enable focused go-lives in 10–16 weeks for single-entity standard-scope deployments. We don't pad timelines to match client expectations.
India Localisation Expertise
GST e-invoicing, e-way bill, TDS/TCS, Indian bank integration and payroll configured correctly from the start — not retrofitted after go-live when the finance team discovers the compliance gaps. India localisation is a structured scope item in every implementation, not an assumption.
Full BTP Extension Capability
Public Edition's Clean Core means BTP extensions matter more. Our team builds SAPUI5 Fiori apps, Integration Suite iFlows, SAP Build automations and HANA Cloud analytics — delivered by the same team as the core S/4HANA implementation, not a separate BTP partner.
Quarterly Update Management
Four SAP releases per year need to be validated and managed. Our AMS team handles the quarterly update cycle — preview environment validation, BTP extension compatibility testing and production deployment — under the same support contract as day-to-day AMS. No separate project quote for every update.
Implementation Through to Managed Services
We implement S/4HANA Cloud and then manage it — the same team covering incident support, change requests, BTP enhancements and quarterly update management under an ITIL-based AMS contract. The continuity of having the implementation team as the AMS team delivers measurably better outcomes post-go-live.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud implementation from a certified SAP Gold Partner with 21 years of delivery
Our S/4HANA Cloud practice builds on the same delivery disciplines — Activate methodology adherence, data migration rigour, India localisation depth and managed services continuity — that we apply across all S/4HANA implementations.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition: frequently asked questions
What is SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition?
SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition is the cloud-native version of SAP S/4HANA — the full ERP suite running on SAP-managed, multi-tenant cloud infrastructure. It includes Finance, Procurement, Manufacturing, Sales, HR and Analytics in one integrated platform with quarterly updates delivered by SAP automatically. It's the foundation product for the GROW with SAP programme and one of the edition options in RISE with SAP.
Does "multi-tenant" mean other companies can see our data?
No. Multi-tenant refers to the shared infrastructure layer — SAP manages a pool of cloud resources across many customers, which is how they achieve cost efficiency and standardised updates. Each customer's data is stored in a completely isolated schema with no cross-customer data access. The multi-tenant architecture is an infrastructure concept, not a data sharing model. SAP's certifications (ISO 27001, SOC 2) govern the isolation and security of customer data on this shared infrastructure.
Can SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition be customised?
Yes — within the Clean Core principle. SAP Key User Extensibility allows adding custom fields, custom logic and custom analytics without development. Extensions beyond this — custom Fiori apps, workflow automations, integrations, portals — are built on SAP BTP. What's not permitted is modifying SAP's core ABAP code or standard objects. This constraint is what enables SAP to deliver quarterly updates to all customers automatically.
How is SAP S/4HANA Cloud different from SAP Business One?
SAP Business One is designed for small businesses (under ~100 users) with simpler processes — solid core ERP, lower cost, faster to implement. S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is designed for mid-market and larger businesses with more complex processes — deeper financial management, advanced MRP, multi-company, revenue recognition, embedded analytics and a broader functional scope. The right choice depends on business complexity, not just company size.
What happens during a quarterly SAP update?
SAP releases a major update package four times per year — new features, enhanced processes, security fixes and localisation updates. SAP first applies the update to a dedicated preview system for each customer. The customer (and their implementation partner) has a defined preview window to validate that the update doesn't affect their configuration or BTP extensions. After sign-off, SAP applies the update to production. Our AMS team manages this cycle — you don't need an internal SAP team to handle quarterly updates.
Is SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition suitable for manufacturing companies in India?
Yes — with some nuances. Standard manufacturing processes (discrete, make-to-stock, make-to-order, subcontracting) are well-covered. India localisation (GST, e-invoicing, e-way bill, TDS) is included. Complex process manufacturing, detailed plant maintenance or highly specific industry requirements may need BTP extensions or — in some cases — Private Edition. We assess manufacturing process fit during the presales engagement so scope is clear before implementation begins.
Want to understand if SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition fits your business?
A 90-minute process assessment maps your key business processes against S/4HANA Public Edition's standard coverage — identifying what fits natively, what needs a BTP extension, and where Private Edition might be the more practical answer. No commitment required for the assessment.
