Unlike general AI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot) applied to ERP data, SAP Business AI understands what a purchase order, a cost centre or a material master actually means in the context of your SAP system. This context-awareness makes it more accurate for business process tasks — it doesn't need to be told what SAP terminology means because it was trained on it.
What is SAP Joule and is it available in our SAP system?
SAP Joule is SAP's generative AI copilot — a natural language interface embedded across SAP S/4HANA Cloud, SuccessFactors, Ariba and SAP Build Work Zone. Users interact with Joule in plain language to query data, trigger actions and get AI-generated recommendations. Joule is available in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (GROW and RISE). It requires activation and user enablement — it is included in the S/4HANA Cloud subscription but does not switch on automatically. Private Edition clients may have Joule availability depending on their release level.
Which AI features in S/4HANA are included in our licence vs additional cost?
Most embedded AI features in S/4HANA — bank reconciliation AI, demand forecasting, lead scoring, Situation Handling, AI email composer and Joule — are included in the standard S/4HANA Cloud subscription without additional licence cost. They require activation and configuration. Some advanced AI features — particularly those requiring SAP AI Core capacity beyond the BTP subscription allocation, or custom document extraction models — may require additional BTP service consumption. We clarify the licence position per feature during the AI readiness assessment.
How much historical data does SAP AI need to be accurate?
It varies by feature. Bank reconciliation AI performs well from 3–6 months of payment history. Demand forecasting typically needs 12–24 months of sales order history per material to account for seasonality. Lead scoring needs at least 6 months of closed opportunity data with win/loss outcomes. Document extraction is less history-dependent — it performs from the first month but improves as corrections are fed back. We assess data volume and quality per AI feature as part of the readiness phase before activation.
Can SAP Joule access data from non-SAP systems?
Joule's native knowledge base is SAP's own data. For data from non-SAP systems, Joule can be extended through SAP's AI Foundation and custom skill development on BTP — enabling Joule to query data from connected systems via Integration Suite or CAP-based data services. This requires custom development; it is not available out of the box. The right architecture depends on which non-SAP data sources are relevant and how frequently Joule needs to access them.
What is SAP AI Core and when do we need it?
SAP AI Core is the platform on SAP BTP for developing, training and deploying custom ML models — for requirements not met by SAP's embedded AI or pre-built AI Business Services. You need AI Core when your AI requirement is specific to your data (custom demand forecasting on your historical sales, quality prediction on your machine data) or when your industry has unique AI needs that generic SAP models don't cover. AI Core requires ML engineering capability; we partner with data science teams or bring ML engineers to the engagement depending on the scope.
